Machine Learning on Insurance Data to Predict Hospitalization

Across nations, healthcare professionals are still struggling to determine when and how to take any possible preventive action, as the number of people that get diagnosed with communicable as well as non-communicable diseases, (requiring complex and costly treatments, hospitalization and re-hospitalization) is growing rapidly.

So, how can we use existing and emerging technology to give healthcare professionals the necessary information and intelligence to effectively apply needed interventions in a timely manner?

It seems emerging machine learning models could offer a much earlier prediction about which patients will develop which specific disease, and thereby create effective intervention methods to help prevent the onset of disease, hospitalization or re-hospitalization.
The following topics were discussed in today’s Risk Roundup:

  • Machine Learning on Insurance Data to Predict Hospitalization
  • Data Science / Data Sources
  • Privacy and Security
  • Challenges

Though we are still at the beginning of the machine learning journey, there is a hope that the on-going machine learning research will open many new possibilities for advanced predictive analytics that will bring healthcare the much-needed power for proactive disease diagnosis, reducing hospital admissions and readmissions in the years to come. While this will not only improve the quality of human lives across nations but will also likely make healthcare cost-effective, timely and proactive, it will also create many security risks. Time is now to talk about security risks emerging from machine learning based on insurance data!
